Most important thing in a functional society is a well-informed public

functional societyAs John Oliver correctly pointed out Sunday night, folks are being fed what they want to hear and they’re eating it up like a starving person. The most important thing in a functional society is a well-informed public. What we have now is not only uninformed but misinformed masses. That’s something that should scare us all.

The most important thing in a functional society is a well-informed public. What we have now is not only uninformed but misinformed masses.

1. Read first. Then share. I myself am guilty of basing comments or even clicking share based on the headline. This is the worst thing any of us could do. Stop being lazy.

2. Check the source (and their sources). In the age of new media true and valid information comes from non-traditional sources but so does a lot of garbage. Any article that posts facts, figures or quotes should provide a source for that information. If there is no backup for their claims, move on.

3. Watch out for recycled stories. One thing that seems to be feeding into the misinformation problem is when old stories are being presented as happening now. Check the date on the story before you read on. You’ll be shocked to see how many are from another time and aren’t applicable to the current event you thought they were talking about.

4. If you care about facts, ignore the blatantly slanted. Having a slant or taking a position on a story is not wrong in itself. What is wrong is when these ideas are taken as unbiased fact. You can avoid all of this by simply avoiding those sites to start with. Any website with the words: Conservative, Liberal, Democrat, Republican, etc. in the title are just advertising how slanted they are. That’s ok if you choose to live in your side’s bubble but please don’t have any delusions that these stories reflect the whole picture.

5. Google it. God (and Sergey) gave us Google for a reason. If you see a story that’s unbelievable or has no sources or even if it does, verify. See if the same facts are reported across multiple outlets. See if anyone disputes these facts. Read these pieces and then make up your mind.

If we could all take these simple steps our society would be a better place. We all have opinions and leanings. There is nothing wrong with that but could we at least all come from a starting point based on facts and reality?

The truth is, sharing illogical things begins to erode YOUR credibility and it makes you look foolish. Trust me, I speak from experience.

Now go share this, please. Be the well informed public. Be the functional society.

Through the process of reason we find our own truth

When will be our next National Day of Reason?

Awakening Reason is a forum for new ideas that are coming forth as a result of the new wave of spiritual evolution. We are realizing that we are responsible for our opinions. We must seek out our own truth through verification of actual facts. We fact find by illuminating what we hear and allowing others to verify or invalidate by their own fact finding. We are responsible for deciding, for ourselves, through reason, what our truth is.

Why don’t we all just know the definitive truth? We only know for sure the facts that we can personally verify. We know where we live, we know where we buy groceries. We know the prices of the things because we have read the price on the shelf and this fact has been verified by what we are charged at the register for this item. We can further verify this fact by researching the item through other sources or settle for the known information as fact. One person my settle for this price as fact, but another may, though ruthless scrutiny, find other information that may raise questions. Thus the process either continues or comes to an end.

The world has become too complex for any of us to know as a palpable fact how the actions of others are affecting our lives. It may be a matter of understanding why these actions affect us. In this case we have the responsibility of learning how and why these actions matter to us. It is more difficult to verify facts because nothing is physically ascertained. We must share what we here continuously to secure the truth. Sometimes we may never prove definitively if the actions of others affects us. We may have to rely on our opinion. The process continues.

I am reintroducing Awakening Reason, because once again there is a dire need for it. Please follow and contribute to Awakening Reason by participating in the ideas shared here. It is the responsibility of everyone that breathes to help educate the people who have not yet learned that they are responsible for their own truth. All comments to this site will be approved except spam and hate. There is no place on earth where either of them is appropriate.

Our Truth

Awakening Reason is a place to discuss peace, love and tranquility. It is a place to share ideas about politics, consumerism, healthcare, human rights and banking regulations. Whatever you question, please bring it.

ORLANDO ISIS ATTACK

Orlando ISIS Attack-An American-born man who’d pledged allegiance to ISIS gunned down 50 people early Sunday at a gay nightclub in Orlando — the deadliest mass shooting in the United States and the nation’s worst terror attack since 911, authorities said.

* The gunman, Omar Mateen, 29, of Fort Pierce, Florida, was interviewed by the FBI in 2013 and 2014 but was not found to be a threat, the FBI said.
* Mateen called 911 shortly before the attack to pledge allegiance to ISIS and mentioned the Boston Marathon bombers, according to a U.S. official.
* Orlando police shot and killed Mateen.
Mateen carried an assault rifle and a pistol into the packed Pulse club about 2 a.m. Friday and started shooting, killing 50 people and wounding at least 53, police said.

A new Congress

Tomorrow the government could shut down. We need a new Congress. It is about time we realize that changes must be made in order for use to get back on track and continue on as a prosperous society. We must eliminate the parasites of the world and empower the people. We must start with the most powerful threat to our well being. That would be Congress.

We all must come to terms with the fact that most of our Congressmen must be replaced with people who want to serve rather than take advantage of their position to promote personal wealth. We must look at the track records of the people we are voting for. If they have been voting to reduce human rights, supporting corporate welfare (over $100 billion last year, that we know of), or refusing to raise taxes on the 1%, we cannot reelect them.

Please help elect a new congress. Please vote wisely. Our future depends on it.

We need a new Congress

Awakening reason is the day we empower a government for the people and by the people.

Awakening Reason is the dawning of a new era in our society. It is the day we empower a government for the people and by the people. The government will stop overspending, the rich will pay their fair share, and there will be no more lobbyism, bribery and backroom deals. Laws will be clear and protect the people. We will go back to banking and corporate regulation.

Awakening Reason is what happens when the people are informed with facts. It is what happens when we tell our representatives what we want and they act on our behalf. Awakening reason is when we sanction the government for all of its actions.

Awakening Reason is a phenomenon that has been growing in our society in recent years. It has always been around, but it has struggled to find its voice. Today, Awakening Reason has a voice. It is getting stronger. It is your voice. It is my voice. It is the voice of American citizens who are realizing that the government is not protecting the best interests of the people. We are the people, not the corporations, not big business and definitely not hate groups.

Americans are becoming informed.
This is Awakening Reason.
